Latem 1953r osadzony w więzieniu stanowym Tennessee w Nashville, gwałciciel Johnny Bragg, spacerował po podwórku z włamywaczem, Robertem Riley'em pełniącym obowiązki w więziennej pralni. Padał deszcz i Bragg rzucił uwagę "Tu spacerujemy w deszczu, i zastanawiamy się, co robią dziewczynki. Riley zasugerował,że byłby to dobry pomysł na piosenkę i w ciągu kilku minut Bragg napisał parę wierszy. Ponieważ był półanalfabetą, poprosił Riley'a, aby zapisał go za drobną pożyczkę.
